Tetra Tech's Aquatic Restoration team is adding a Junior Civil/Environmental Engineer to support stream, river, and watershed restoration projects across the Pacific Northwest. The Junior Civil/Environmental Engineer will support engineering design, hydrologic/hydraulic modeling, construction oversight, fieldwork, and technical report development for aquatic restoration and surface water projects. This role includes opportunities for professional growth while contributing to meaningful ecological restoration work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, or Water Resources Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in WA/OR/ID or in progress toward PE.
  • 5-8 years of experience in civil, earthwork, stormwater, or surface water engineering - aquatic restoration experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and working knowledge of ArcGIS.
  • Strong technical writing skills and experience preparing engineering reports and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Civil 3D surfaces, corridors, profiles, grading, and breaklines.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Comfortable walking 2-10 miles/day on uneven or rugged terrain.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (rain, heat, cold, wind).
  • Ability to participate in extended field rotations (multi-day trips).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with stream gage analysis, hydrology calculations, and flow statistics.
  • Proficiency with hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software (HY8, HEC-RAS, HydroCAD, HEC-HMS, HEC-SSP, etc.).
  • Experience with 1D/2D hydraulic modeling for stream restoration design.
  • Experience with sediment transport modeling tools.
  • Field experience with construction oversight for restoration or riverine projects.
  • Knowledge of modern instream design and aquatic organism passage design practices.
  • General knowledge of land survey tools (RTK-GPS, Total Station) and software (Trimble Business Center).

Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering design plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D (surfaces, points, corridors, profiles, grading, etc.).
  • Develop construction cost estimates and schedules using RS Means, Microsoft Project, and related software.
  • Write technical reports including design reports, specifications, implementation plans, and agency correspondence.
  • Perform hydrologic analyses and develop hydraulic models using HEC-RAS (1D/2D), HY8, HEC-HMS, HEC-SSP, and other tools.
  • Provide construction oversight for aquatic restoration fieldwork (earthwork, large wood placement, culverts, bridges, etc.).
  • Collaborate with engineering, biology, ecology, and geomorphology staff on multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and support project managers with field and office deliverables.
  • Travel for field assignments, including multi-day or multi-week trips throughout the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
