About The Position

Performs construction and maintenance work on electric transmission and distribution facilities. Works with, trains and directs the work of employees in lower classifications. Inspects, troubleshoots, and repair transmission, distribution, secondary and service systems. Installs, removes, maintains, and inspects secondary lines, services, and meters.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must pass company written job knowledge test and job performance test administered by Foreman.
  • Must be a graduate of the apprenticeship program or possess equivalent knowledge.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state Class A commercials driver’s license (CDL); must have and maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Must reside within a 30-minute radius of WCEC headquarters.
  • Strong Customer Service skills required.
  • Must be a great team player.

  • Must maintain strict confidentiality in performance of duties.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with fellow employees and members.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of company safety rules and practices.
  • Good physical condition: Sitting (50%), Standing/walking (50%), Climb (65%), bending, lifting (100 lbs. maximum in ideal conditions).
  • The physical requirements of this position are very heavy work, exerting in excess of 100 lbs. of force of lift occasionally and/or in excess of 50lbs. of force or lift frequently, and/or in excess of 20lbs. of force or lift constantly to move objects.
  • This position requires the ability to perform pole top and bucket rescue.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation and be able to perform all physical activities to the position.
  • Must have the physical ability and manual dexterity to operate all machines and equipment in the department.
  • Must become skilled at pole climbing and in using lineman’s tools while working on a pole.
  • Common and complex eye, hand, and finger dexterity required.
  • Essential functions require talking, hearing, and seeing.
  • Must be able to work in the presence of environmental factors such as heat/cold, dust, rain, and high winds and noise.
  • Must be available for on-call duty as required; be able to travel for training.
  • Must be available for planned and emergency overtime as required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a safe working and living environment for employees, members, and the general public by adhering to policies, procedures, and regulations; and by possessing a knowledge of our Safety Manual and safe work practices generally accepted in the electric industry.
  • Serves members by providing services requested; performing connects, reconnects, disconnects; answering questions and offering assistance.
  • Conserves resources by maintaining assigned vehicle and cooperative property and equipment.
  • Constructs powerlines by climbing poles and working from aerial devices; helping with groundwork; by safely and efficiently performing all types on Overhead and Underground construction work on energized and de-energized lines and equipment; by possessing an adequate knowledge of SPEC books, the NESC code, NEC code, other applicable codes, and industry procedures; and by possessing a knowledge of all electrical and electronic equipment used in the electric industry.
  • Ensures the cooperative’s preventative maintenance program by inspecting power lines and keeping acceptable associated records and by maintaining the electric system to avoid power outages; Restores service by making emergency or permanent repairs and replacing fuses; Operates switches and cutouts to energize or de-energize circuits; Makes minor adjustments to operating equipment; Sets equipment controls as directed.
  • Switches and parallels company and customer circuits, transmits clearances and deenergizes company and customer equipment for construction, maintenance or repairs.
  • Conducts voltage, phase and load tests of lines. Checks conditions of lines, transformers, and substation equipment for abnormal voltages, overloads, and before energizing.
  • Maintains electric service by performing all types of maintenance and operations work; by possessing the mathematical knowledge and ability to calculate electrical load requirements; by possessing a knowledge of all electrical and electronic equipment used for maintenance and operations purposes including but not limited to: metering, instrument rated metering, AMR metering. Load Management equipment, capacitors, voltage regulators, transformers, single phase and multi-phase transformer connections; by checking voltage, amperage, etc.; by utilizing various types of test equipment including but not limited to overhead and underground fault locators and fault indicators; and by performing all other maintenance and operations work as required on all other equipment, structures, devices, and conductors; by trimming, cutting, and removing trees; by applying chemicals to trees and brush as required within local, state, and federal regulations and according to manufacturers instructions; by maintaining and completing all records and paperwork; and by possessing knowledge of the Cooperative Sectionalizing and Line feeds and by possessing knowledge of proper trouble shooting techniques.
  • Finds locations of work site by reading maps on computers; and by adequately utilizing the computerized mapping system.
  • Helps with material handling by loading and unloading vehicles, performing general cleanup when assembling and disassembling line equipment.
  • Directs the work activities of an apprentice lineman as assigned and assists in the on-the-job training of apprentice linemen during their four-year apprenticeship to assure safe working practices are followed and to help assure, they are capable of assuming Journeyman Lineman duties after the training period is complete.
  • Helps others performing other related duties as may be requested; cooperating with other employees; being available for work during regular hours and after hours when needed and during emergencies; by participating in On-Call responsibilities; by working at annual meetings and other required meetings; and by teaching and instructing others about safe and productive Line and Maintenance work.
  • In addition, other responsibilities may be assigned to perform other duties from time to time.
