About The Position

Under general supervision, to maintain, repair, install and troubleshoot electrical and related equipment at City of West Jordan facilities including buildings, water facilities, and streetlights. Electrical systems and equipment include street and area lighting, facility power distribution; motors switch gear, automated control systems and similar apparatus. Works under the supervision of the City's Master Electrician and reports directly to him/her.

Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: One year of experience working as licensed journeyman under the supervision of a master electrician.
  • Valid Utah Driver's License
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a Journeyman Electrician License under Utah DOPL.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire, the Utah Flagger, Forklift Operator, and OSHA 10 Hour course certificates.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire, a valid Utah class A or B Commercial Driver License.
  • Knowledge of: Principles and procedures of electrical motors, wiring, pumps and lighting systems, electrical law and theories.
  • Knowledge of: Installation and maintenance associated with municipal lighting systems.
  • Knowledge of: City policies, procedures and codes related to the maintenance and repair of buildings and facilities.
  • Knowledge of: Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the maintenance and repair of buildings and building facilities.
  • Knowledge of: Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting.
  • Knowledge of: Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment.
  • Knowledge of: National Electric Code (NEC).
  • Knowledge of: Safe driving principles and practices.
  • Skill with: Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner in routine situations.
  • Skill with: Operate a variety of maintenance and repair tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Skill with: Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software.
  • Skill with: Operate a motor vehicle safely.
  • Ability to: Perform responsible skilled electrical maintenance and repair work with accuracy, speed, and safety.
  • Ability to: Operate tools and equipment used in electrical work; operate equipment as needed including boom truck, trencher and underground boring equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to: Repair and maintain a variety of electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to: Diagnose causes of electrical failure; ability to recognize the proper parts for replacement purposes.
  • Ability to: Read, interpret, and apply a wide variety of technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Ability to: Apply good judgment and practical knowledge to resolve problems in electrical systems maintenance.

  • Ability to: Operate snow removal equipment during work hours and outside of regular work hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Complete work orders as assigned relating to building maintenance, city streetlights, water pumps, motors and switch gear and similar apparatus by making appropriate repairs and adjustments.
  • Assists in on-going maintenance of City facilities; installs and modifies building lighting and power distribution systems in conformance with the National Electric Code.
  • Repairs or replaces faulty wiring and damaged equipment and distribution systems which include indoor and outdoor systems and may be underground or concealed. Works with Facilities staff on electrical installation and maintenance of city facilities.
  • Maintains facilities which house electrical equipment. Removes grease, dirt, snow or leaves, pumps out water, and requests maintenance by other trained personnel.
  • Rebuilds various types of electrical equipment including pumps, motors, lighting equipment and switch gear. Installs electrical conduit and pull wires.
  • Draws basic wiring diagrams for maintenance and installation work.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed and time and material used. Maintains inventories of equipment and replacement parts.
  • Assists in ordering supplies and maintains an inventory of electrical supplies. Performs preventative maintenance.
  • Troubleshoots various types of electrical equipment including high and low voltage power supplies, motors, pumps, lighting, feeds, and telemetry, and makes appropriate repairs through obtaining necessary equipment and parts and installing same.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
