About The Position

The Journeyman Electrician is responsible for the safe, efficient, and code-compliant installation of commercial and industrial-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and microgrid infrastructure across California. This position requires active supervision of apprentices and laborers, adherence to NEC and California Building Code requirements, and compliance with all prevailing wage rules on public and private works projects. The ideal candidate holds a valid California General Electrician (Journeyman) certification and has demonstrated experience with large-scale solar and storage projects.

Requirements

  • A valid driver’s license is required. This role involves the regular operation of company vehicles to transport tools, materials, and personnel. Driving is an essential function of the job.
  • Current California Electrical Journeyman’s license - A requirement of California prevailing wage projects.
  • 5+ years of electrical experience, including:
  • 2+ years installing commercial or industrial PV systems
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC Articles 690, 705, 706, 708, and 310
  • Able to read and interpret one-line diagrams, construction documents, and panel schedules
  • Proficient in conduit bending (EMT, PVC, RMC), wire pulling, and terminations
  • Fluent in the use of digital multimeters, megohm testers, and commissioning tools
  • Must be able to work in outdoor environments, including on roofs or in excavated areas
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work in physically demanding conditions
  • Project types include utilities and remote facilities
  • Travel is primarily throughout California, and overnight travel will be expected.

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ year experience with BESS or microgrid installations (optional)

Responsibilities

  • Plans, assigns, schedules, and supervises the work of unlicensed electricians and helpers engaged in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, instrumentation, and solar panel systems.
  • Install AC and DC circuits, including raceways, conductors, and overcurrent protection for: PV arrays, inverters, combiner panels, monitoring devices BESS components (battery banks, PCS, disconnects, fire suppression) Microgrid equipment (islanding switchgear, control systems, genset tie-ins)
  • Complete conduit bending, wire pulls, and equipment terminations for systems rated up to 1500V
  • Properly torque all connections and ensure NEC-compliant labeling and grounding
  • Install and wire: Battery racks, energy management systems, and thermal/fire control devices Transfer switches, load controllers, and smart inverters for microgrid applications
  • Assist in testing and commissioning BESS using manufacturer-specific protocols
  • Coordinate with engineers and OEM reps during system energization and integration
  • Perform start-up and verification of solar, storage, and microgrid systems
  • Verify performance metrics, string voltages, current outputs, and system integrity
  • Troubleshoot operational issues in PV circuits, inverters, communications, or BESS controls
  • Lead 2–6-person crews, including apprentices and laborers
  • Assign daily tasks, ensure safety and productivity goals are met
  • Mentor junior electricians and ensure trade best practices are upheld
  • Interpret one-line diagrams, site plans, and submittal packages
  • Coordinate with GC, EPC, and utility personnel for inspections, outages, and grid tie-ins
  • Follow project schedules and ensure accurate daily reporting
  • Enforce OSHA, Cal/OSHA, NFPA 70E, and company safety protocols
  • Conduct daily tailgate meetings and ensure all PPE and fall protection are used properly
  • Participate in job hazard analysis (JHA) and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures
