About The Position

The Journey Level Substation Technician position requires a combination of education and practical experience in the electrical and electronic field. Candidates must successfully complete Tri-State’s Substation Technician Apprentice Program or have six years of relevant experience. The role involves working with high voltages and requires a valid Colorado Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker endorsement. The technician will be responsible for maintenance and testing of electrical equipment, including power transformers and circuit breakers, and must be willing to travel and work under various conditions.

Requirements

  • Must have a satisfactory work record.
  • Must have a valid Colorado Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker endorsement, or be able to obtain it within 6 months.
  • Must have First Aid and CPR Certification, or be able to obtain it within 6 months.
  • Must have four years of practical experience in maintenance of industrial electrical-electromechanical-electronic control equipment.
  • Must have one year of electric power substation apparatus maintenance experience.
  • Must have two years of experience in testing, calibrating, and repairing protective relay devices and revenue meters.
  • Must have sufficient knowledge and skill in the safe use of basic hand tools, power tools, electrical and electronic tools, and electronic test equipment.
  • Must be able to climb steel structures and work at various heights.
  • Must be able to work in confined areas.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a successful Background Check.
  • Complete a Personal Risk Assessment and Fair Credit Reporting Act Form if required.
  • Pass the Transmission 'Technical Apprentice Qualification' Test with a score of 75% or better.
  • Pass the Transmission 'Substation Technician and Substation Apparatus Technician' Practical Test with a score of 75% or better.
  • Successfully complete Tri-State’s Substation Technician Apprentice Program.
  • Maintain and repair industrial electrical-electromechanical-electronic control equipment.
  • Test and repair power transformers and circuit breakers.
  • Test, calibrate, and repair protective relay devices and revenue meters.
  • Interpret electrical schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and control logic.
  • Work in and around high voltages.
  • Travel up to 75% of working time.
  • Work extra and irregular hours as needed.
