The Teacher Assistant—Bilingual Spanish I position is designed to support the instructional process in a school setting, particularly for Spanish-speaking students. The role involves assisting teachers in various educational activities, supervising students, and utilizing bilingual skills to enhance communication and learning outcomes.

  • Assist in the instruction of pupils using bilingual skills in English and Spanish.
  • Supervise students during lunchroom and playground activities.
  • Monitor corridors and review student identification cards for security purposes.
  • Help students understand and complete classroom assignments.
  • Prepare bulletin boards and display students' work in classrooms.
  • Operate photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce educational materials.
  • Maintain the orderly arrangement of classrooms.
  • Greet and direct visitors to appropriate areas of the school.
  • Consult with teachers regarding concerns of individual students.
  • Operate audio-visual equipment for educational purposes.
  • Tutor students under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
  • Collect and grade students' homework assignments and examination materials under supervision.
  • Supervise the loading and unloading of students on school buses.
  • Assist in the receipt, processing, and issuance of new books under supervision.
  • Collect daily classroom absentee reports and contact parents to verify causes of student absences.
  • Must possess a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
  • Completion of at least 60 semester hours of college credit at an accredited college or university or successful completion of a paraprofessional exam (WorkKeys or ParaPro).
  • Good knowledge of proper grammar and spelling in English and Spanish.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics.
  • Knowledge of CPS rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work with school-age children.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Good reading skills.
  • Skill in operating audio-visual equipment and personal computers is highly desirable.
  • Experience working in an educational environment.
  • Familiarity with special education practices.
