The Student Intern role is for any intern from the WVU Med Ed, Med Tech, Jackson County Co-Op Internship Program, or WIN (Workforce Initiative for Nurses) Academy. The student interns will perform duties specified by the department that is chosen.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in High School as a Junior or Senior
  • Must be accepted into WVU Med Ed, MTech, Jackson County Co-Op Internship program, or WIN (Workforce Initiative for Nurses) Academy.
  • Physically capable of prolonged period periods of standing and walking; capable of lifting to 60 pounds and pushing loaded carts weighing in excess of 200 pounds; possess visual/oral acuity along with manual dexterity; able to discern and distinguish colors; able to transcribe phone messages.
  • Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
  • Must be able position and/or lift patients and stand or walk 4 to 12 hours per day.
  • Work requires standing and walking for greater than eighty per cent of work schedule.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials and pharmacological agents with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment with PPE; work task completion is prioritized based on patient care or departmental needs; exposed to chemicals, blood, and body fluids; may need to respond with mentor to patient care need in the operating room environment; some work functions are done with use of computer/scanners.
  • Work will sometimes be performed in a normal clinical outpatient environment.
  • Frequently exposed to biohazards, as well as communicable disease.
  • Ability to respond quickly to varying demands from provider and patient.
  • Cognizant of environmental factors, infection control issues and maintains a safe environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties assigned within each rotational area of the program.
  • Operates hospital equipment and handles medical equipment, instruments and supplies including biological testing, according to established procedures.
  • Completes department specific documentation.
  • Communicates professionally with hospital visitors, patients, staff and providers.
  • Performs basic mathematical calculations.
  • Answers phone and routes calls appropriately.
  • Interacts with and assists patients as dictated by each department in rotation.
  • Collects patient specimens.
  • Gathers patient data
  • Handles patient medications.
  • Provides assistance to staff and medical personnel as needed.
  • Gathers patient supplies/carts and restocks departmental supplies as needed.
  • Cleans and organizes workstation/environment as needed to promote patient/employee safety.
