About The Position

Cass County is creating an eligibility list for the position of Jailer. This is a continuous posting and will be used to fill future vacancies. This may result in a delay in receiving updates on your application. PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide jail security and care for the prisoners’ medical/personal well-being while incarcerated. Also, to prepare and maintain all incarceration records and reports. WORK PERFORMED/JOB FUNCTIONS: Maintain prisoner security in accordance with conditions conducive to good health, welfare and cleanliness. This includes admitting and processing prisoners brought in by law enforcement agencies and office personnel (ie bookings, record checks, health status assessment, fingerprinting and photographing prisoners, completing admission forms, searching prisoners, issuing toiletries and health care necessities, establishing an inmate file, entering booking into computer, taking criminal history and securing prisoner’s personal belongings, computer, etc.); arranging appointment for prisoners who are in need of medical treatment, legal counsel or other kinds of treatment; attending to various needs of prisoners such as feeding, administering medication and making sure scheduled appointments and court appearances are kept; and maintaining all records and reports associated with the incarceration of prisoners. Miscellaneous duties involve assisting in the transportation of prisoners and other patients to various state institutions and other agencies; maintaining communication with other jailers in order to resolve or alleviate potential problems; escorting inmates to and from court; maintaining inventory of supplies; obtaining urine samples when necessary; interacting with prisoners on a personal level in order to maintain a safe, secure and controlled environment; and overseeing Huber releases and day passes. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have the ability to deal with difficult persons who are being incarcerated.
  • Requires the ability to work swing shift and shift changes.
  • Should have the physical attributes and the emotional stability efficient to implement security requirements.
  • Requires the ability to copy with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with the respect for the rights of others.
  • Requires a working knowledge of the department’s and state’s policies, rules, regulations, controlling laws and ordinances or the ability to acquire such knowledge in a relatively short period of time.
  • Requires a working knowledge of first aid and administration of medication.
  • Also requires some proficiency in utilizing a state linked computer system.
  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must have no Felony convictions.
  • Requires high school degree or its equivalent.
  • Also requires advanced First Aid and CPR training.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Heavy to very heavy physical activities requiring climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, near and far acuity, depth perception, accommodation, field of vision, and control of others.
  • The employee must exert in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • Typically, inside work in a jail setting.

  • Maintaining all records and reports associated with the incarceration of prisoners.
