About The Position
The Jail Officer at Western Tidewater Regional Jail is tasked with maintaining the safety and security of the facility, which includes overseeing all inmates, personnel, and the public. This role involves constant interaction with inmates, supervising their daily activities, and ensuring compliance with facility rules and regulations. Officers are responsible for conducting security checks and inspecting housing units and cells in accordance with established policies and standards. They must enforce rules firmly, fairly, and consistently while providing assistance and direction to inmates regarding procedures, behavior, and schedules. Additionally, Jail Officers are required to accurately prepare, maintain, and update computerized logs and detailed reports, responding promptly to emergency situations and providing backup support to fellow officers when necessary. In cases of health concerns, they must notify medical staff urgently. The position requires physical fitness, as officers must be able to walk extensively, run occasionally, and climb stairs. Officers will work 12-hour rotating shifts, both day and night, and are considered essential personnel, subject to recall during emergencies or inclement weather.
