The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, and has approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. The Jail Compliance Inspector position in the Construction Section’s Jail and Detention Unit conducts semiannual inspections of county, municipal and regional jails to monitor compliance with state rules and statutes for jail operation. This position investigates and responds to inmate grievances, conducts follow-up inspections regarding corrective action plans, and ensures any life safety deficiencies are corrected. Other responsibilities include: Evaluating operating practices. Evaluating detainee/inmate treatment. Evaluating the physical facility. Provide technical assistance to local sheriffs and county officials. This position has a possibility of being home based, as long as the home is determined to meet business needs within North Carolina. This position requires four (4) days per week of travel throughout the state with 1-2 overnight stays a week, and the ability to do on-site inspections.
