The City of Durham is hiring a specialized EMT for the Involuntary Commitment (IVC) Response Unit within the Durham Community Safety Department (DCSD). This position is part of a new pilot program aimed at providing compassionate care and behavioral health expertise to individuals in crisis. The IVC Response Unit will consist of a two-person team, including a Licensed Clinician and an EMT, who will conduct in-field first examinations to assess individuals for involuntary commitments. The goal is to avoid unnecessary hospital transports and provide immediate support to those in need. This role is grant-funded for two years, with the potential for permanent funding thereafter. The EMT will also engage in traditional EMT roles on Community Response Teams as needed, responding to 911 calls related to mental and behavioral health crises without law enforcement involvement.
