About The Position

IV Lead Pharmacy Technician Reports to: The IV Pharmacist, Production Manager, and Pharmacist in Charge The IV Lead Pharmacy Technician oversees the work of a team of IV Pharmacy Technicians that assist the IV Pharmacist with the dispensing of sterilely compounded prescription medications DISCLAIMER: The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a pharmacy technician training program preferred.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification is a plus.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in sterile compounding, preferably in a pharmacy or healthcare setting.
  • Proficiency in aseptic techniques and sterile compounding procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in medication preparation and documentation.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks accordingly.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy laws, regulations, and standards governing sterile compounding.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a diverse team of healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Determines priorities and assigns and regulates the routine work production performed by technicians.
  • Assists with department scheduling.
  • Ensures all Rx labels are printed accurately and efficiently by delivery run time
  • Ensures all orders are packed and prepared for delivery by following workflow monitor
  • Expedites the processing of prescriptions by performing all duties necessary and allowable by law and policy both in preparation for pharmacist fill and upon pharmacist completion of dispensing duties
  • Communicates workflow progress with on duty pharmacist(s)
  • Ensures quality, production and customer service standards are maintained
  • Trains, develops and integrates new technicians
  • Contributes to the production strategy by understanding the metric goals and how to achieve them
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of department processes
  • Responds quickly and practically to emergencies, crises, or unexpected issues during the shift
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Fosters a collaborative and positive working environment
  • Communicates with pharmacy management on issues or opportunities that may impact workflow, efficiencies or production
  • Sterile Compounding: Prepare sterile intravenous medications according to established protocols and procedures. This includes accurately measuring ingredients, compounding medications, and ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
  • Quality Assurance: Perform routine inspections and quality control checks to ensure the integrity and sterility of compounded medications. Follow strict aseptic techniques and maintain cleanliness in the compounding area to prevent contamination.
  • Inventory Monitoring: Monitor inventory levels of compounding supplies and medications, and assist in the ordering and stocking of pharmaceutical products. Keep accurate records of inventory transactions and expiration dates.
  • Compliance: Adhere to all relevant regulations and guidelines governing pharmacy practice, including USP 797 standards for sterile compounding. Assists in ensuring that all environmental monitoring is completed on time and documented. Routinely audits clean room and IV processes to ensure compliance and reports deficiencies immediately to the Pharmacist-in-Charge.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate the preparation and delivery of intravenous medications. Communicate effectively to ensure seamless workflow and patient safety.
  • Patient Care: Maintain a patient-centered approach in all aspects of job responsibilities. Ensure timely and accurate delivery of intravenous medications to long-term care facilities and patients, addressing any concerns or inquiries with professionalism and empathy.
  • Training: IV lead will participate in evaluating staff competencies at a minimum of every 6 months, or as specified in USP 797. Will also assist with non-sterile compounding training and assessment according to USP 795, as deemed necessary by the Pharmacist-In-Charge. IV Lead will assume responsibility for on-time completion of assessments and training.
  • Personnel: Responsible for daily oversight of IV technicians, including workflow, training, and auditing of compounding forms and processes. Any issue or complaint related to the IV department that arises and cannot be resolved by the IV lead will be escalated to the Pharmacist-In-Charge or the Production Manager.
