Requirements

  • High school education and 4-6 years experience as a building heating, ventilating, cooling and controls mechanics.
  • Ability to read and write the English language.
  • Environmental Protection Agency Refrigerant Certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of air conditioning (i.e. heating, ventilating, cooling, filtration, humidifying), controls, and refrigeration systems.
  • Maintains air conditioning and refrigeration equipment of all types including absorption, centrifugal and compressor units.
  • Performs required preventive maintenance on installed equipment.
  • Inspects and examines various components which make up the system to detect mechanical or electrical failures.
  • Disassembles various related equipment to note condition and make necessary repairs or replacements.
  • Checks electrical, electronic and pneumatic controls peculiar to air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and makes necessary adjustments, repairs or replacements.
  • Pumps down and charges units with appropriate refrigerants.
  • Performs installation of equipment as outlined by engineer, using blueprints, sketches, specifications and manufacturers recommendations.
  • Tests and balances air and chilled/hot water systems.
  • Keeps records and makes reports of daily work, emergency/service calls investigated, service rendered, results of troubleshooting and general condition of equipment and systems.
  • Makes recommendations for modification.
  • Reviews controls and control systems for proper operation, sequencing and optimum efficiency and recommends changes to achieve optimum operation.
  • Adheres to all University, Departmental, and OSHA safety policies, practices, and requirements.
  • Performs other related duties of similar complexity, including the maintenance of tools.
