About The Position

Monitors traffic via computerized surveillance and control equipment located within an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) managed area. Disseminates information to the public through various forms of communication. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: Assists with tours and information sessions concerning the operations of the ITS control center. Develops and evaluates incident response scenarios. Performs real time traffic studies to determine traffic routing. Advises the general public of traffic conditions through the use of computerized variable message signs, highway advisory radio and/or low frequency television broadcasts. Assists incident response teams. Disseminates traffic information through various communication devices to other governmental agencies located within the operations center and/or managed area. Monitors traffic flow and conditions through the use of loop detector systems, closed circuit television systems and/or automated vehicle identification systems. Uses two-way radios to interact with other transportation and law enforcement agencies. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis.
  • 3 years of experience in traffic studies, analysis, computer ops, electronics, traffic management, telecommunication ops. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Working Knowledge of: Information systems/technology processes and procedures Data processing equipment and information systems Freeway management system concepts and operations Traffic flow principles and procedures Radio protocol procedures Applicable ITS related computer applications and operations Emergency response procedures Collecting, sorting and compiling data Analyzing and organizing business and technical data Administrative support practices and procedures to include writing, editing and report writing techniques, recording meeting notes, record keeping and records management Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Must be able to report for duty to respond to emergency situations during inclement weather.
  • To be selected for and continue employment in this position, the selected incumbent must maintain the security or integrity of the agency’s critical infrastructure and will be subject to regular assessments of criminal history and/or reviewed for connections to foreign adversaries.
