About The Position

ITS Operations Tech I: Monitors traffic via computerized surveillance and control equipment located within an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) managed area. Disseminates information to the public through various forms of communication. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. ITS Operations Tech II or III: Monitors traffic via computerized surveillance and control equipment located within an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) managed area. Disseminates information to the public through various forms of communication. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. ITS Operations Tech IV: Plans, coordinates and schedules shift operations for an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) managed area. Leads a group of technical employees engaged in monitoring traffic via computerized surveillance and control equipment located within an ITS control center. Disseminates information to the public through various forms of communications. Works under time critical conditions when resolving emergency traffic situations. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • 2 years of experience in Traffic studies, analysis, computer ops, electronics, traffic management, telecommunication ops. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Some knowledge of: Freeway management systems concepts and operations, Traffic flow principles and procedures, Fundamentals of electrical/electronics and design procedures, Radio protocol procedures, Applicable ITS related computer applications and operations, Emergency response procedures
  • Some skill in: Collecting, sorting and compiling data, Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment, Coordinating and directing multiple projects, Analyzing and organizing business and technical data, Administrative support practices and procedures to include writing, editing and report writing techniques, recording meeting notes, record keeping and records management, Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems, Using applicable electronic test equipment, Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

Responsibilities

  • Adjusts and performs minor maintenance or repairs to system equipment.
  • Advises the general public of traffic conditions through the use of computerized variable massage signs, highway advisory radio and low frequency television broadcasts.
  • Assists in developing routine incident response scenarios.
  • Assists in performing real time traffic studies to determine traffic routing.
  • Coordinates with districts and divisions on developing and implementing Title VI policies, procedures, manuals and guidelines.
  • Disseminates traffic information through various communication devices to other governmental agencies located within the operations center and managed area.
  • Monitors traffic flow and conditions through the use of loop detector systems, closed circuit television system and automated vehicle identification systems.
  • Provides technical assistance and inspections in the field as needed.
  • Updates traffic management data base.
  • Uses two-way radios to interact with other transportation and law enforcement agencies.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned
  • Operates all equipment located within the operations control center
  • Monitors internal and external computer systems, switching equipment, communications equipment and all peripheral equipment associated with ITS operations.
  • Oversees and monitors operations of the ITS for managing an area-wide transportation system.
