About The Position

The ITS Electrician installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) electrical components and communication infrastructure. This role supports highway, tunnel, and traffic management systems, ensuring all field devices, wiring, and control equipment operate safely and reliably. The ITS Electrician is responsible for both power and low-voltage systems and works closely with technicians, engineers, and construction crews during installs, upgrades, and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Journeyman Electrician
  • 2+ years of experience in electrical installation, maintenance, or traffic signal/ITS work.
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC power, low-voltage systems, and grounding.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and work from technical plans.
  • Experience using electrical testing equipment (multimeters, TDR, OTDR preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license; clean driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior ITS, traffic signal, or DOT roadway electrical experience.
  • Experience with fiber optic installation and splicing.
  • Knowledge of NEMA cabinets, traffic controllers, and communications networking.

Responsibilities

  • Install and test ITS devices including sensors, cameras, dynamic message signs (DMS), radar, VDS, fiber cabinets, traffic signals, and detection equipment.
  • Pull, terminate, and label power, fiber optic, and low-voltage cabling .
  • Build and wire electrical service cabinets, control cabinets, and communication panels.
  • Install conduit systems (PVC, EMT, rigid) both above and below ground.
  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with electrical codes and DOT specifications.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical faults in ITS equipment, field wiring, power supplies, and communication circuits.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all ITS field assets.
  • Test circuits, grounding, and power distribution systems using proper test equipment.
  • Locate and repair damaged wiring caused by construction, weather, or accidents.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, traffic signal plans, and wiring diagrams.
  • Document repairs, replacements, and system updates in asset management systems.
  • Assist with system commissioning, acceptance testing, and field verification.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and follow OSHA and DOT safety requirements.
  • Work in roadway environments with proper traffic control setups.
  • Use lockout/tagout and proper PPE for all energized work.
