About the position

This position is for an IT Specialist (SysAdmin) within the National Minerals Information Center at the U.S. Geological Survey. The role involves creating, configuring, maintaining, and updating IT systems, managing information systems, and optimizing their functionality. The specialist will prepare technical specifications, develop standard operating procedures, and ensure compliance with IT requirements and policies. The position also includes designing, developing, testing, implementing, and documenting software, as well as supporting the maintenance of existing applications.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as point of contact for creating, configuring, maintaining, and updating IT systems.
  • Manages several information systems supporting the National Mineral Information Center.
  • Prepares technical specifications and determines best approaches to implementation.
  • Develops standard operating procedures for IT hardware tasks.
  • Designs, develops, tests, implements, and documents software.
  • Identifies and mitigates security vulnerabilities and risks.
  • Assists in the development of automation options and participates in finalizing requirements.
  • Supports the maintenance of existing applications software by designing, coding, testing, and debugging programs.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
  • Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period.
  • Experience demonstrating attention to detail, customer service, oral communication, and problem solving.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Reporting Services, Visual Studio, JavaScript, and VB.NET.
  • Design and development experience with SQL Server based web applications.
  • Experience with data warehouse implementation and tools like Tableau and ETL.
