About The Position

The Senior IT Cloud Engineer plays a critical role in shaping Mayo Clinic’s multi-cloud strategy by designing and building the foundational control plane that governs and orchestrates cloud services across the enterprise. This position requires deep technical expertise in cloud architecture and automation, combined with strong leadership skills to guide engineering teams and influence best practices. You will be responsible for creating scalable, secure, and resilient control plane solutions from the ground up—enabling identity management, policy enforcement, orchestration, and automation across AWS, Azure, and GCP. The role also involves building components of an Integrated Developer Platform (IDP) to deliver a seamless developer experience, implementing Infrastructure-as-Code for consistency, and embedding compliance through policy-as-code. This is an opportunity to lead innovation in cloud governance and automation, mentor technical talent, and ensure Mayo Clinic’s cloud ecosystem meets the highest standards of reliability, security, and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 years’ demonstrated technical experience and 1 year of demonstrated leadership experience, or Associate’s degree with 7 years’ experience and 1 year of demonstrated leadership experience, or HS/GED with 9 years of experience and 1 years’ of demonstrated leadership experience in a large, complex organization like Mayo Clinic may be considered in lieu of the degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple environments including cloud and on-premise, and multiple operating systems.
  • Functional understanding of cloud ecosystem and leading-edge cloud emerging technologies.
  • Working knowledge of the practical application of engineering and technology including applying principles, techniques, procedures, hardware and tools to the design and production of various products and services.
  • Working knowledge of data center design best practices.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply DevOps principles and ways of working.
  • Ability to develop and deliver requirements, concepts of operations, use cases, demonstrations, and presentations to both one-to-one and in small groups.
  • Knowledge of approaches, tools, and techniques for anticipating, recognizing, managing, and resolving technical (hardware, software, application, or operational) problems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and present to senior management and executive stakeholders (e.g., IT Leadership).
  • Certification in cloud engineering is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Proven experience designing and building cloud control plane solutions, including orchestration and scalability best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, Azure, and/or GCP.
  • Strong Terraform and IaC skills; scripting in Python, Go, or Bash.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and container orchestration.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring experience.
  • Familiarity with Spacelift.
  • Experience building Integrated Developer Platforms (IDP).
  • Exposure to Open Policy Agent (OPA), HashiCorp Vault, and CI/CD tools (Azure DevOps, GitHub).
  • Background in regulated industries (e.g., healthcare).

Responsibilities

  • Control Plane Architecture: Design and implement cloud control plane solutions, including orchestration frameworks, governance layers, and automation pipelines.
  • Integrated Developer Platform (IDP): Build components that enable developer self-service, automated workflows, and streamlined experiences.
  • Infrastructure-as-Code: Develop and maintain Terraform modules and automation workflows for consistent, secure deployments.
  • Automation & APIs: Create APIs and automation tools for resource management and governance.
  • Security & Compliance: Embed policy-as-code, enforce guardrails, and maintain RBAC compliance.
  • Monitoring & Observability: Integrate cloud-native services with centralized logging and alerting platforms.
  • Leadership: Mentor engineers, provide technical direction, and foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
