About The Position

SUMMARY: The IT Technician supports the installation, maintenance, and operation of technology and communications systems across Harris County ESD 11 facilities and vehicles. This role performs hands-on technical work involving low-voltage cabling, access control, video surveillance, radio systems, and mobile/vehicle-mounted technology in a public safety environment. The IT Technician responds to service requests, supports field operations, documents work performed, and follows established procedures to ensure reliable and secure technology systems that support emergency medical services. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Installs, pulls, routes, terminates, and tests low-voltage cabling, including Cat5e/6 and fiber optic cabling (RJ45, LC/SC), in facilities, vehicles, ceilings, walls, and conduits. Installs, configures, and maintains access control systems, including panels, badge readers, electronic locks, and related infrastructure. Installs, mounts, and supports IP-based video surveillance systems, including cameras, NVRs, and associated network components. Provides support for mobile and vehicle-mounted technology, including mobile data terminals (MDTs), cellular routers, GPS/AVL systems, and related hardware. Supports radio and communications systems through cable runs, antenna installation, equipment setup, and basic programming or reprogramming in coordination with vendors. Assists with deployment and maintenance of RFID, asset tracking, and inventory management tools. Performs routine inspections, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and minor repairs to ensure systems remain operational and reliable. Supports EMS vehicle upfitting projects involving IT and communications equipment installations. Responds to service tickets and on-site support requests across the service area in accordance with established priorities and procedures. Assists with system testing and validation following installations, repairs, or upgrades. Provides basic end-user support and instruction related to installed systems and equipment. Maintains accurate documentation of installations, configurations, maintenance activities, and resolutions. Tracks and maintains assigned tools, equipment, and spare parts in accordance with department procedures. Supports vendor-led installations or repairs by preparing sites, assisting with setup, and documenting completed work. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, required.
  • At least 2 years of experience supporting technology systems in EMS, fire, law enforcement, or public sector environments.
  • Proven experience with radio systems (Motorola, Kenwood, etc.) and AVL or GPS tracking tools.
  • Proficiency with low-voltage cabling and termination, structured wiring, Cat5e/6 and fiber optic termination and testing.
  • Familiarity with access control, IP video systems, and mobile/vehicle IT systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical diagrams, floor plans, and wiring schematics.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while following established procedures, work instructions, and priorities.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to remain calm and professional in high-volume or time-sensitive support situations.
  • Ability to accurately document work and resolutions while maintaining confidentiality and data security.
  • Valid Texas driver's license and insurable driving record.
  • Must not have been excluded by the OIG to participate in federally funded healthcare programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree in IT, electronics or related field, preferred.
  • Industry certifications (BICSI, FOA CFOT, CompTIA Network+, Axis, Genetec, etc.) preferred.
