About The Position

The Issues Management Communications Lead at Marathon Petroleum Company serves as a strategic advisor and program leader focused on protecting the company's reputation and facilitating its growth. This role encompasses issues management, crisis communications preparedness, and business development communications, requiring the delivery of well-crafted messaging to both internal and external audiences. The successful candidate will leverage consulting, influencing, coaching, project management, and content development skills to navigate a complex business landscape.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Ten or more years of experience producing communications for various channels and audiences at a large or midsized company or public relations firm.
  • Five or more years of crisis communications experience in an industrial environment, including experience with the Incident Command System.
  • Three or more years of strategy/business development-related communications experience preferred.
  • Energy or manufacturing industry experience preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in managing emergency response situations under the Incident Command System.
  • Strong understanding of internal and external communications strategies and best practices.
  • Ability to establish relationships with media representatives.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with leaders to advance their business objectives through compelling communications.
  • Create and deliver executive-level communications plans and materials for complex, sensitive, and business-critical issues.
  • Develop and implement issues-management strategies and tactics.
  • Monitor and provide communications guidance on emerging issues that could impact stakeholder engagement or media relations needs.
  • Respond to media inquiries as needed and ensure alignment of corporate and local messaging.
  • Implement sound crisis communications response principles under high-stakes circumstances.
  • Craft and manage communications content including news articles, videos, presentations, and social media posts.
  • Partner with the broader Communications & Community Relations team to align corporate positioning.
  • Participate in emergency-response drills as part of the Joint Information Center (JIC).
  • Provide guidance and support to less experienced team members.
