About The Position

Requirements

  • Associates Degree from an accredited community college.
  • Up to one year of experience working in an observatory or research facility.
  • First-year college level knowledge of physics and astronomy.
  • Functional knowledge of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations associated with a research lab or telescope facility.
  • Demonstrated ability in establishing working relationships within a team.
  • Ability to follow and provide clear and concise verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to perform basic mechanical maintenance.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain it throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR/AED (or ability to obtain within three months of hire).
  • Completion of UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two weeks of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Accompanies the Telescope Operator to fulfill the two-person safety requirement.
  • Monitors weather and conditions for safe transportation to and from the observatory facility.
  • Ensures vehicles are in safe operating condition through simple maintenance and scheduled servicing.
  • Performs tasks assigned by the Observatory Manager during night-time hours.
  • Monitors facility equipment (e.g. HVAC, air compressors, dome and shutter movement) for maintenance recommendations.
  • Drives project vehicles to worksites.
  • Operates the telescope under the direction of the on-duty Telescope Operator to execute astronomical observing programs.
  • Assists with slew and point to targets, focus, and start guiding.
  • Prepares the telescope for observing by opening the shutter and mirror covers, and assists with instrument cryogen fills.
  • Performs safety inspections to ensure the telescope facility is safe at the end of scheduled observing.
