About The Position

The position involves raising, placing, and connecting girders, columns, and other structural-steel members to form complete structures or frameworks. The work schedule varies depending on the assigned project.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED
  • Minimum of 6 months experience, one year certificate from a technical school or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid driver's license to operate motor vehicles
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10's and 100's, ability to perform these operations using unit weight measurements and volumes
  • Ability to calculate rate, ratios and percentages
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
  • Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards

Responsibilities

  • Promote and comply with all Company and safety policies and procedures
  • Setup hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural-steel members
  • Fasten steel members to cable of hoist using chain, cable or rope
  • Signal worker operating hoisting equipment to lift and place steel member
  • Guide member using tag line (rope) to guide it into position
  • Pull, push or pry steel members into approximate position while member is supported by hoisting device
  • Force members into final position using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks and hand tools
  • Align holes in members with corresponding holes in previously placed member by drift pins or spud wrench through holes
  • Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of members, using plumb bob and level
  • Bolt aligned members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded in place
  • Cut and weld steel members to make alterations, using oxyacetylene welding equipment
  • Maintain a professional appearance
  • Other duties as assigned by Foreman or Superintendent
