About The Position

The ironworker foreperson addresses duties associated with administration and operation of the ironworker shop. Plans, schedules, coordinates, and supervises the work of ironworkers.

Requirements

  • A) Certificate of completion of apprenticeship as an Ironworker under a registered Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training program.
  • OR-
  • B) Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Ironworker, with a minimum of four (4) years (48 months) of actual work at the trade, which may have included apprenticeship or vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Ironworkers i.e. raising, placing, and uniting iron or steel girders, columns, and other structural members to form completed structures or structural frameworks.
  • Four (4) years (48 months) of additional work experience of actual work at the trade, which may include supervisory work experience related to the trade
  • Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license. at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • Ability to work effectively with and understand customer needs and requirements.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and safe and proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to effectively supervise others (plan, organize, prioritize, assign, and follow up on assignments).
  • Ability to give directions both orally and in written form that are concise and understandable.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, and blueprints.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of all structural iron work and University Building Standards.
  • This position requires the ability to multi-task on a routine basis due to the number of issues that must be dealt with daily.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises, provides leadership, and assigns work to ironworkers assigned to the ironworkers shop to be completed in accordance with prioritized needs and schedules. Plans and organizes the ironworker maintenance and alteration work performed by ironworkers and other assigned personnel. Assists with estimates by providing labor and material costs for assigned projects which may include departmental charge-out, maintenance repairs, and preventative maintenance. Works closely with the work management center, project coordinators, engineering, and building maintenance. Monitors schedule and controls craft-related costs. Performs ironworker work as needed or assigned.
  • Monitors work performance of assigned personnel and ensures satisfactory work quality and completion requirements are being met. Monitors work to ensure compliance with prevailing codes and university facilities standards as well as correct procedures and techniques. Visits job sites to ensure satisfactory work quality and completion requirements are being met.
  • Maintains records of work completed, material purchasing, overtime lists, and training records. Verifies and approves mobile timekeeping and/or timecards.
  • Participates in schedule review meetings with the work management center. Participates in multi-craft work order review meetings with shop forepersons and building maintenance supervision.
  • Is responsible for tools, equipment, and materials assigned for use in the refrigeration shop. Inventories tools and equipment.
  • The foreperson must be available to provide leadership for emergency response during off normal working hours.
  • Makes recommendations for safety initiatives and programs, hiring and discipline, and addresses performance issues. Responsible for safety and policy enforcement.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
