About The Position

The IR Thermography Technician is responsible for performing ground and aerial based infrared inspections of overhead distribution and transmission electrical infrastructure, and all applicable use cases across the western United States. This role conducts thermal scanning on a variety of assets and equipment in the electrical utility, oil and gas, and commercial industries. This position is a contract field role with strong opportunity to support multiple programs and clients as Acuren continues to grow its infrared inspection business across the western United States.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products; familiarity with GPS data logging, circuit tracker management, and GIS-based route data preferred

  • Infrared Thermography certification (ASNT or equivalent) required at the Level II or Level III required
  • Minimum 1–5 years of infrared inspection experience in field environments; prior overhead utility line IR inspection experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with overhead distribution or transmission electrical infrastructure IR inspection is preferred; prior utility contractor program experience is a strong asset
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout the contract period across multiple districts in the western United States.
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) required; ability to operate a full-size 4WD pickup truck on mountain, rural, and off-road terrain
  • Ability to remain seated in a vehicle or at a desk for extended periods while operating IR camera equipment during scanning or reviewing imagery — typically 10-12 hour shifts
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Adequate vision (with or without correction) for interpreting thermal images and reading equipment displays in bright outdoor conditions; ability to track overhead conductors and components while vehicle is in motion
  • Sufficient hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for operating IR camera equipment and drones while vehicle is in motion and during stationary anomaly documentation stops
  • Ability to reach overhead and at varying angles to aim and operate IR camera from inside vehicle cab and from ground level during anomaly stops
  • Ability to stand, walk, and hike on uneven terrain for circuit sections requiring pack-in access; ability to bend, kneel, and crouch as needed for inspection access at ground-level equipment
  • Adequate hearing (with or without aids) to communicate with crew partner and respond to radio and satellite communications in remote field locations
  • Sufficient balance and mobility to navigate varied terrain including mountain, rural, and off-road surfaces; ability to drive a full-size 4WD pickup truck safely in all assigned terrain conditions
  • Ability to wear and operate required personal protective equipment (PPE)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of overhead distribution and transmission electrical infrastructure from a moving vehicle, scanning pole-to-pole along assigned circuit routes.
  • Operate IR camera to identify hot spot anomalies on various components and equipment
  • Comply with all applicable safety requirements including daily tailboard completion, HFRA fire safety protocols, traffic control procedures, and required PPE, immediate escalation of high priority findings.
  • Travel extensively throughout the contract period across multiple districts and service territories in the western United States
  • Other work duties as assigned.
