About The Position

The IP Portfolio Manager will provide timely, subject matter expert patent advice, guidance, and insights to the Associate Directors, Licensing and Licensing Managers (Licensing Team) on patent management matters. This role involves managing patent portfolios in various areas including optics, computing, artificial intelligence, hardware, communications, software, transportation, and/or energy technologies, as well as therapeutic, diagnostic, drug delivery, genetic engineering, medical device, biomanufacturing, biomaterials, and/or drug discovery technologies. The position is a two-year term, benefits eligible, and is hybrid with core in-office days on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in physical or life sciences.
  • Registered Patent Practitioner.
  • Minimum of seven years of relevant experience managing or advising on large patent portfolios.
  • Experience filing and prosecuting patents, preferably at a company or university.
  • Deep knowledge of patent law.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact capably with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Solid interpersonal skills reflecting courtesy, diplomacy, and collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Exercise discretion in work assignments.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented, matrix-like environment.

  • Detailed understanding of nuanced issues related to the protection of IP and enforcement of patents owned by an academic institution.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert patent advice and guidance to the Licensing Team.
  • Manage patent portfolios in specified technology areas.
  • File, prosecute, maintain, and defend MIT's patent portfolio.
  • Interact with various stakeholders to address patent management matters.

Benefits

  • Salary range: $140,000-$175,000.
