About The Position

As the IoT Data Architect at MultiTech, you will lead the design and implementation of data architectures for our expanding IoT offerings, with a primary focus on LoRaWAN solutions and, to a lesser degree, support for cellular products (including LTE Cat 1bis, Cat 4, and emerging 5G pathways). This role is pivotal in evolving MultiTech's LoRaWAN-centric solutions—such as Conduit® gateways, mPower™ Edge Intelligence, and wireless sensors—into intelligent, software-driven platforms that incorporate AIoT (AI + IoT) capabilities, while ensuring compatibility and hybrid support for cellular backhaul and standalone cellular deployments. You will drive strategies to enhance data flows across LPWA and cellular networks, enable real-time insights, and future-proof our portfolio for emerging trends in edge intelligence, predictive analytics, and sustainable IoT deployments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or a related field strongly preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • 8-10+ years of professional experience in IoT, data architecture, or systems engineering, with a proven track record in designing hybrid cloud/edge solutions required.
  • Deep knowledge of cloud architectures (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP IoT services), edge architectures (e.g., containerized runtimes, edge gateways), and system-level hardware architectures (e.g., integration with microcontrollers, sensors, wireless modules).
  • Strong expertise in wireless protocols, with primary proficiency in LoRaWAN and secondary familiarity with cellular technologies (e.g., LTE Cat 1bis/Cat 4, NB-IoT, emerging 5G eRedCap, Private LTE/CBRS).
  • Proficiency in data modeling, ETL/ELT processes, messaging protocols (e.g., MQTT, CoAP), and API design for IoT ecosystems across LPWA and cellular networks.
  • Experience with AI/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, TinyML) and their application in IoT contexts, including edge inference and cloud analytics.
  • Familiarity with real-time operating systems (e.g., Zephyr OS), low-power design principles, and hardware-software co-design, particularly for LoRaWAN with cellular backhaul support.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide influential and project leadership to small teams, manage projects under constraints, and communicate complex architectures to stakeholders.
  • Understanding of software development best practices, version control (e.g., Git), CI/CD pipelines, and quality assurance in IoT environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience providing leadership in IoT product development or architecture teams preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with MultiTech products (e.g., Conduit® gateways with LoRaWAN and cellular options, mPower™ Edge Intelligence) or similar enterprise IoT hardware preferred.
  • Proficiency in advanced AIoT concepts, such as federated learning, digital twins, or agentic systems for autonomous IoT preferred.
  • Knowledge of security principles for IoT (e.g., zero-trust models, secure boot) and commitment to cybersecurity across multi-protocol deployments preferred.
  • Experience in verticals like industrial IoT, smart buildings, utilities, or logistics, with a focus on data-driven outcomes (e.g., predictive maintenance) in hybrid LoRaWAN/cellular environments preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable data architectures spanning edge, gateway, cloud, and hybrid layers for MultiTech's LoRaWAN portfolio, with secondary support for cellular products (e.g., Conduit® series with LTE backhaul, embedded cellular modems, and Private LTE/CBRS solutions).
  • Architect end-to-end systems that integrate hardware (e.g., LoRaWAN sensors/gateways like Conduit® Series, cellular-enabled Conduit® models), edge processing for real-time decision-making, and cloud services for advanced analytics and storage, prioritizing LoRaWAN while accommodating cellular connectivity options.
  • Develop and inject strategies for data management, including standardized schemas, streaming/batch pipelines, security models, and APIs, to enhance MultiTech's IoT value proposition across primarily LoRaWAN and secondarily cellular deployments.
  • Drive the incorporation of AIoT features, such as edge-based ML inference for anomaly detection, cloud-based predictive models, and agentic AI for autonomous operations, with applicability to both LoRaWAN low-power networks and cellular higher-bandwidth scenarios.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., embedded software engineers, hardware designers, product managers) to align data architectures with business goals, ensuring interoperability, scalability, and compliance with industry standards (e.g., LoRa Alliance, 3GPP for cellular, industrial security protocols).
  • Evaluate and recommend tools, frameworks, and platforms (e.g., AWS IoT, Azure IoT, TensorFlow Lite for edge AI) to optimize data flows, reduce latency, and support low-power LPWA designs alongside reliable cellular connectivity.
  • Lead small teams or mentor engineers in prototyping proofs-of-concept, conducting architecture reviews, and implementing data-driven enhancements to existing products, with emphasis on LoRaWAN and supplementary cellular integrations.
  • Anticipate future trends in AIoT, such as digital twins, self-optimizing networks, and energy-efficient edge computing, and develop roadmaps to integrate them into MultiTech offerings, considering hybrid LoRaWAN + cellular use cases.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of architecture, strategies, and implementations, including diagrams, data models, and performance metrics for multi-technology environments.
  • Ensure data architectures adhere to security best practices, privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), and sustainability goals (e.g., minimizing data transmission for battery longevity in LoRaWAN while leveraging cellular for higher throughput needs).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
