About The Position

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. State Troopers are committed to protecting North Carolina's motoring public. The State Capitol Police is seeking a qualified applicant for the position of Investigator. Duties include collecting and analyzing evidence, interviewing witnesses and suspects, preparing investigative reports, and coordinating with prosecutorial and law enforcement partners. The Investigator ensures investigations are conducted in compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures. This posting is for two (2) positions. Position numbers 60069049 & 60067903

Requirements

  • Knowledge of applicable criminal laws, investigative methods and rules of evidence
  • Skill in conducting interviews and basic investigations to obtain accurate and relevant information.
  • Ability to collect, document, and preserve evidence in accordance with established procedures.
  • Skill in preparing clear, concise investigative reports and documentation.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and apply ethical standards in investigative activities.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience in law enforcement work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as an Investigator is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts criminal investigations to include misdemeanor and felony investigations
  • Collaborate with other LE agencies depending on the facts of the case and any cross jurisdictional aspects of the case.
  • Interview victims, witnesses and suspects.
  • Collect, processes and package evidence and maintain documentation of events for possible court testimony.
  • Gather/compile data, review/analyze and recommendations to anticipate, prevent or monitor suspected criminal activity and assist in determining the correct course of action.
  • Writes investigative reports and/or receives investigative reports from initial responding officers.
  • Provide case information on past and present investigations command staff, administrative staff, supervisors and any other individuals deemed appropriate upon request.
  • Assist with various law enforcement related (non-investigative) duties to include special events, permitted and non-permitted events, rallies, protests, events of civil unrest, etc.
