Description: The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conserving the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) serves Massachusetts’ citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats while providing sustainable fisheries-related recreational and commercial opportunities. Job Opening\: The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries seeks applicants for a Seasonal Invertebrate Fisheries Technician to perform the following duties:

Requirements

  • Knowledge of fisheries biology and management.
  • Experience collecting data at sea aboard research vessels or commercial fishing vessels
  • Working knowledge of computer word processing and spreadsheet software including MSWORD and EXCEL and familiarity with basic statistical techniques for summarizing biological data.
  • Familiarity with sampling gear commonly employed in the field of fisheries science and associated disciplines.
  • Ability to identify marine coastal fish and shellfish.
  • Ability to compile, analyze, and present data in tabular and graphical form.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with fishermen, other scientists, and the public .
  • Ability to work outdoors in non-ideal conditions, sometimes in the middle of the night, and lift up to 50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of sampling design and application.
  • Experience working with or around pot/trap fishing gear.
  • Ability to navigate and operate small boats.
  • Experience working as or with SCUBA divers.

Responsibilities

  • Carries out at-sea biological sampling on commercial fishing vessels.
  • Conducts, under supervision, biological surveys in coastal waters, including work on beaches and small craft in bays and estuaries.
  • Operates, with training, small craft as “top person,” for divers.
  • Records and organizes data, including computer coding and data entry for computer analysis.
  • Assists in technical and non-technical writing of reports, and graphical presentations of data.
  • Operates and maintains field equipment including specialized environmental data recording instruments, sampling gear, and motor vehicles, including small boats and trailers.
