About The Position

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department (Raleigh Parks) is seeking qualified candidates for the Invasive Species Program (ISP) Assistant Coordinator position. The ISP Assistant Coordinator will help support ISP objectives to evaluate and control invasive plant and wildlife species across the Raleigh Parks system. The successful candidate will work closely with peers, partners, and volunteers to deliver on ISP policies, goals, and performance standards and may serve as a team lead for specific initiatives. The successful candidate will need to be organized, detail-oriented, a creative problem-solver, and a strong communicator who is passionate about ecological management and conservation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Natural Resources-related field of study such as Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Horticulture, or similar field directly related to assignment.
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Common non-native invasive plant and wildlife species of the SE United States.
  • Native flora and fauna of SE United States, especially those with a federal or state listed conservation designation (i.e., Endangered, Threatened, Significantly Rare, etc.).
  • GPS/GIS and the utilization of related field technology.
  • Working with a variety of stakeholders including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and/or public groups; managing stakeholder interests that may be in conflict.
  • Developing informational materials with the goal of educating the public on invasive species related topics, as well as authoring and editing detailed reports and documents.
  • Conflict resolution, negotiation strategies, consensus building, and community outreach and engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Implements management strategies related to the control and prevention of invasive plant and wildlife species within the City of Raleigh Parks system using mechanical and chemical control techniques as well as integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
  • Assists PRCR staff, volunteers, and external partners in on-the-ground implementation of Departmental invasive species control efforts using a variety of tools and techniques, including motorized and non-motorized cutting tools and pesticide application equipment.
  • Assists the ISP Coordinator to provide oversight for invasive species control projects with third-party contractors to ensure that control projects complete the defined objectives and follow accepted protocols/regulations.
  • Utilizes GPS/GIS tools and platforms to implement field mapping and tracking strategies.
  • Responsible for the diligent recording/reporting of Department approved herbicides, and tools/equipment used to successfully complete invasive species control objectives.
  • Contributes to the development and delivery of educational public outreach campaign.
