About The Position

The IOM Technologist performs a preoperative assessment of the patient and conducts intraoperative sensory and motor tests using currently accepted electrophysiological techniques. Data is compiled, interpreted, and communicated in real-time. The IOM Technologist completes post-operative reports and billing forms. The purpose of this testing is to reduce the incidence of post-operative neurological deficits. Under the supervision of the clinical manager, the IOM Technologist is responsible for patient consultation, equipment setup, intraoperative monitoring, documentation, and additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • CNIM or CNIM-eligible required.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Must have current AHA CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, neuroanatomy, and pathologic processes.
  • Ability to analyze various electronic and neurophysiologic waveforms.
  • Interpersonal communication skills necessary to interact with medical staff and patients.
  • Ability to stand, turn, and stoop among equipment in an operating room suite.
  • Ability to apply electrodes with precision and speed.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a preoperative assessment of the patient and conducts intraoperative sensory and motor tests.
  • Explains test procedures to patients and family members.
  • Measures and applies recording electrodes according to the international 10-20 Electrode Placement System.
  • Calibrates, evaluates, and adjusts equipment for optimal data acquisition.
  • Interacts with the surgical team to provide interpretive data regarding the patient’s neurological status.
  • Identifies and eliminates physiological and non-physiological artifacts.
  • Documents significant events and stages of surgery in a timely manner.
  • Assists new IOM technologists after completing training.
  • Attends scientific courses and seminars for continuing education if workload allows.
