About The Position

The Interventional Radiology Tech performs radiology examinations and interventional diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to produce radiographs within special procedures areas. This role requires reviewing patient medical records, determining equipment and supply needs, and testing specialized equipment like contrast media injectors, program selectors, and film changers. The tech is responsible for explaining procedures to patients, performing routine and special radiology examinations in accordance with patient care policies, and ensuring sterile/aseptic techniques. They operate various imaging and radiographic equipment, assist physicians and radiology staff during procedures, and monitor patient conditions, reporting any adverse reactions. Key aspects include providing staff and patient protection through radiation safety, correcting technical errors for clear images, processing films/images, and ensuring accurate documentation in the Radiology Information System (RIS) and PACS. The position involves collaborating with patients, families, and hospital staff, maintaining confidentiality, responding to emergencies, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. Additionally, the tech assists in the orientation and supervision of new staff and students, completes continuous training, and contributes to the care and maintenance of equipment and a safe, clean work environment. On-call and callback coverage is a required component of the role.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an AMA approved program in radiology technology
  • Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient population as specialty assignment dictates
  • Additional training may be required in area of assignment
  • ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Registration by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) required or attained within three (3) attempts at passing the registration examination or twenty-four (24) months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs radiology examinations and interventional diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to produce radiographs within the special procedures areas.
  • Provides on-call and callback coverage as required.
  • Reviews patient's medical record prior to each examination to obtain and record identifying information required for the procedure and patient records.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills and maintains competencies required to provide care appropriate to age of the patients served within department.
  • Determines equipment/supply requirements and test special equipment such as contrast media injectors, program selectors, and film changers to ensure that equipment elements are timed and synchronized to operate at desired intervals.
  • Exercises judgment in selecting proper equipment/computer settings.
  • Informs and explains examination purposes and procedures to the patient prior to commencement of testing in a caring, compassionate, and sensitive manner.
  • Performs routine radiology and special procedure examinations as ordered by physician, consistent with patient care policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management, infection control practices, patient safety practices and departmental activities.
  • Preps patient for procedure ensuring compliance to principles of maintaining sterile/aseptic technique by self and members of the team.
  • Operates a variety of imaging and radiographic equipment in the performance of interventional diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to produced desired images.
  • Performs diagnostic procedures as qualified by education, skill, competency, and experience.
  • Assists physician and radiology staff during procedure.
  • Monitors patient condition and equipment during procedure.
  • Reports adverse or any unusual reactions or events.
  • Provides staff and patient protection in accordance with prescribed radiation safety standards.
  • Recognizes and corrects technical errors to ensure a clear and accurate recording/image.
  • Photographs images and processes film/images for viewing in accordance following established procedures.
  • Ensures accurate documentation in performing and processing all procedures including proper ordering, charging, and computer entry.
  • Operates the Radiology Information System to enter required test data and patient information, using all appropriate modules with accuracy.
  • Ensures patient information and images are correctly transmitted to PACS system.
  • Documents care based on standards of care and practice and/or clinical priorities for documentation (assessment, radiology procedure, and patient's response during procedure).
  • Confers and works collaboratively with patient/family/hospital staff in a customer responsive and courteous manner, in compliance with iRESPECT standards and promoting patient/customer satisfaction to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information.
  • Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains required department records, reports and files.
  • Utilizes patient computer system to enter and retrieve data.
  • Participates in quality/performance improvement.
  • Collects quality data for monitoring performance improvement and to produce the best value service.
  • Provides support to radiology and other medical and hospital staff to provide clinical assistance as needed.
  • Assists in orientation and supervision of new staff members and students when they provide patient care, treatment and services as part of their training.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements.
  • Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities which includes committees, monitoring and follow-up.
  • Assists in care and maintenance of equipment and effective utilization of supplies.
  • Reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel.
  • Prepares or cleans patient rooms by changing linens, stocking supplies and wiping off tables and equipment.
  • Adheres to established policies, compliance/quality improvement, and safety, environment and infection control standards.
  • Provides on-call and call back coverage as required.
