About The Position

Interventional Cardiology Opportunity- Danbury Hospital Summary: Provides assistance to the cardiologists/vascular surgeons with diagnostic cardiac and endovascular procedures. Provides the highest level of pre and post procedure care under the direction of the supervising physician.

Requirements

  • APRN license or PA license.
  • Skilled in taking medical histories, assessing medical condition, and interpreting findings.
  • Skilled in all aspects of invasive cardiac and peripheral procedures including use of equipment.
  • Highly complex conceptual thinking.

Responsibilities

  • Provides pre-procedure patient management by reviewing the patient's medical record, obtaining a complete medical history, performing a physical examination, and documenting all findings. Writes pre-procedure orders.
  • Provides pre-procedure education, explains the risks, benefits, and alternatives to procedure, obtains consent, and completes paperwork.
  • Makes daily rounds independently or with the cardiologists/interventionalists on patients with known or suspected cardiac disease and writes daily progress notes.
  • Evaluates changes in patient status, initiates and orders appropriate medications, lab tests, radiographic, and cardiac imaging studies.
  • Consults with supervising physicians to insure patient and physician satisfaction.
  • Administers IV medications. Inserts and removes vascular sheaths, inserts/removes central venous and arterial lines by means of a surgical cutdown or percutaneous puncture. Reviews ECGs, inserts nasogastric tubes and indwelling urinary catheters.
  • Provides post-procedure follow-up, gives detailed discharge instructions, prepares written prescription orders for medications and controlled susbstances, and discharges patients after discharge criteria are met. Dictates discharge summaries.
  • Follows ACLS protocol in the event of a complication or code 99. Performs cardiac resuscitation and defibrillation, assesses the patient, establishes IV access, and administers drugs as needed.
  • Participates in the on-call schedule to provide coverage 24/7. Duties include assisting with procedure emergencies, patient evaluation amd management, and urgent transfers.
  • Supports other needs of the Cardiovascular Service Line as directed by the Cath Lab Director.
  • Assists staff, if needed, with patient flow pre and post procedure.
  • Assists cardiologist and/or surgeon, acting as first assistant, during cardiac catheterizations, PCI, Swan Ganz Insertions, Intra-aortic Balloon Insertion, endovascular/peripheral procedures, permanent pacemaker & ICD implants & other invasive procedures.
  • Assists surgical PA's, if needed, with cross-coverage across the service line.
  • Provides educational instruction, as needed, to other members of the team.
  • Assists with the collection of data, when requested, for ACC-NCDR registry and the Connecticut registry. May also assist in research studies or clinical trials.
  • Achieves the organization's established expectations with regard to quality service, teamwork, self-development, and community service.
  • Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
