About The Position

Provides students who have a variety of disabilities with effective instruction and learning opportunities. Motivates students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in accordance with each student's Individual Education Plan.

Requirements

  • Valid Ohio certification/licensure
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education of Students with Disabilities
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
  • Excellent observation and communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Supports the learning of students with disabilities in alignment with state standards. Uses courses of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Works cooperatively with regular education classroom teachers who have students with disabilities, interprets the abilities and disabilities of these students to the entire staff, and helps differentiate instruction.
  • Collaborates with regular education teachers to establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Provides instruction in the resource room or inclusionary classroom.
  • Provides one-on-one or small group instruction based upon a variety of instructional techniques and strategies.
  • Uses de-escalation techniques and intervenes in reducing disruptive behavior.
  • Teaches socially appropriate behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement.
  • Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the needs of the students with disabilities.
  • Participates in the intervention and evaluation process.
  • Assists students with disabilities in achieving educational and occupational goals.
  • Makes data driven instructional decisions to improve student outcomes.
  • Develops and maintains accurate and compliant special education records.
  • Collects and reports data on student achievement.
  • Evaluates progress of each student on current IEP goals and informs parents of results in writing at interim and progress report times.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the district and selected professional growth activities.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor when dealing with students, parents, and staff.
  • All other duties as assigned.
