About The Position

The Interpreter Services Specialist position provides communication access (ASL interpreting and coordination) for the staff and consumers of the Greensboro Regional Center. Travel will include coverage of the region's 10 counties plus statewide, as needed, occasionally involving nights and weekends. Position provides unique interpreting services as well as mentoring services for the 10 central most counties of NC. The position is also the the primary lead position within the regional center to provide services to our large group of interpreters within our 10-county region. It requires demonstrated knowledge, skills, and experience in serving a wide variety of the needs of the target population. Job responsibilities include: Identifying developmental needs of area interpreters Coordinating and/or providing trainings and skills development Providing information on legal compliance related to interpreting including the ADA and NC Licensure Law Developing local interpreter resources Receiving and approving accurate invoices from contracted interpreters Serve as the Greensboro Regional Center's representative in local interpreter meetings Coordinating and providing ASL Interpreting services to Regional Center Staff. This includes providing Tactile ASL interpreting if there are DeafBlind staff assigned to the Regional Center

Requirements

  • Must be licensed to interpret/transliterate as determined by the North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator Licensing Board before starting employment with DSD
  • Bachelor’s degree in an interpreter training program from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of professional interpreting experience in a community, business, or government program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Necessary Special Qualification If applicable as defined by GS 90D, meets the requirements for licensure as determined by the North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator Licensing Board.

Nice To Haves

  • Thorough knowledge of Deaf culture, American Sign Language, interpreting practices and processing models (long term memory, short term memory, visualization, monitoring, language fluency, evaluation, assessment, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of State and Federal laws as they relate to communication access
  • Must have ability to interpret and transliterate in a variety of settings and for a variety of consumers with various registers including formal to intimate
