Position Summary: Provide English/Spanish translation services for patients, physicians, and/or other health care providers, associates, or agents requiring translation services for a patient-related reason within the organization.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: None specified; will accept any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. Preference may be given to individuals possessing a HS diploma or GED.
  • Minimum Experience: Must be able to demonstrate competency in the foreign language required.
  • Licensure Requirement: Must have an interpreter certification through the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI), Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), or obtain certification from the TN Language Center with 90 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous interpreter experience preferred.
  • Two (2) years of interpretation experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Translate written materials from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English. Materials may include but are not limited to, newsletters, bulletins, forms, letters, menus, memoranda, notices, and teaching materials.
  • Assists in the development and revision of forms and other communications for Spanish-speaking patients/families.
  • Incorporates age-specific information into interpretation/translation communications and/or activities as directed by clinical areas.
  • Identifies and addresses language barrier issues to increase productivity and efficiency, which may include making necessary phone calls to patients or addressing them upon their arrival in clinic.
  • Provides interpretation and translation of medical terminology to patients and their families; provides explanations to facilitate communications, promotes understanding, and develops rapport between Spanish speaking patients/families and healthcare providers.
  • Refrains from providing any other medical advice other than what is being given by trained staff.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Works toward achieving goals and objectives and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • May answer telephone calls and route accordingly.
  • Receives and records changes in patient information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with insurance procedures; demonstrates knowledge of which plan the provider(s) participate.
  • Ensures procedures and corresponding diagnosis are properly recorded on the fee slip for charge entry.
  • Responsible for scheduling appointments for return visits and end of day procedures and balancing.
  • Compiles data for the billing personnel.
  • Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as directed.
  • Collaborates with the patient, physician, and other care team members as part of a team based approach to overall patient care.
  • Completes required education assignments annually as required and successfully passes the medical interpreter assessment.
