About The Position
The Interpreter - Certified ASL position involves providing accurate interpretation in American Sign Language (ASL) and serving as a cultural bridge between staff/providers and patients/families on deaf/Deaf culture. The role assists deaf, deaf and blind, and hard-of-hearing patients and/or family members who communicate in ASL to navigate the UNM healthcare system. Services are provided via in-person and video remote interpreting (VRI) as assigned. The interpreter will also teach/train health system staff on diversity and cultural competence issues related to the deaf/Deaf community and cultural norms, ensuring adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignments may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.
