About The Position

The Interpreter (ASL) position at Mt. San Antonio College is a temporary, at-will role that requires providing American Sign Language and/or oral interpreting services to employees who are deaf, hard of hearing, and/or have other communication needs. The position is designed to support the College's mission of providing quality education and services to a diverse student body. The Interpreter will be responsible for facilitating communication in various settings, including meetings, conferences, and training sessions, ensuring that Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing employees have equal access to information and discussions. The role requires a high level of skill and knowledge in interpreting, as well as the ability to adapt to different communication styles and terminologies. This is a continuous recruitment for an applicant pool to fill temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis, with a commitment of at least 20 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Possession of Interpreter certificate/certification (CI or CT, NAD levels 4-5, CDI, NIC, Texas BEI, or EIPA).
  • Ability to interpret and use a variety of registers consistent with diverse signers.
  • Knowledge of cultural competencies and environmental awareness.
  • Ability to adapt different styles of signing.

Nice To Haves

  • More than four (4) years of interpreting experience in a higher education setting.
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in American Sign Language, interpreting, education, social work, or a related field.
  • Successful completion of an Interpreter Training Program.
  • 1,800 hours of professional ASL interpreting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide American Sign Language and/or oral interpreting services to employees who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Facilitate communication in meetings, conferences, seminars, and training sessions.
  • Adapt terminology and concepts to ensure accurate interpretation for Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing employees.
  • Preplan and prepare for assignments by reviewing materials and meeting with signers.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in interpreting.
