About The Position

Are you interested in conservation education and forestry? Spend the summer with the Forest Service at the Wrangell Ranger District in Southeast Alaska as the Interpretation and Conservation Education Intern. Through this internship, learn about project and partnership management, create and executing community events and programs and work with community members. You will assist in recreational projects that focus on visitors and public engagement. This internship will focus on creating opportunities and resources for the community and partners in Wrangell. The Internship will require you to work with other departments within the Wrangell Ranger District to assist in projects. This internship will take place in person in Wrangell, Alaska. There may be some field day where you will be traveling to remote recreation sites in the district. You will be provided with transportation both to and from recreation sites. For public events, uniforms are required. Uniforms will be provided to interns during the first week while onboarding and training. Protective equipment and tools will be provided. There will be 2 interns hired for this position.

Requirements

  • Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently.
  • You will need a valid driver’s license to drive company vehicles.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Comfortable working with children
  • Crafty and creative
  • Must be 18 years old at time of hire.
  • Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary school/program or a recent graduate (1-2 years)
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

  • Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment

  • Learn about the US Forest Service’s project and partnership management
  • Create community educational resources
  • Plan weekly interpretation programs and community events including:
  • Reading with a Ranger
  • Forest Explorers
  • 4th of July Parade Preparation
  • Bearfest week
  • Weekly Rec and Road Report- KSTK Radio)
  • STEAM Camp
