Interpretation Ambassador - ONSITE- Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
About The Position
This internship supports the National Park Service at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DEWA) by helping expand bilingual (English–Spanish) interpretation, outreach, and communication in one of the nation’s most densely populated regions. The intern will help strengthen visitor safety messaging, extend community engagement, and improve public access to essential park information. Working closely with interpretive staff, community partners, and visitor use teams, the intern will plan and deliver bilingual public programs, create Spanish-language materials, assist with river-safety initiatives, and produce digital content designed to reach Spanish-speaking audiences. The intern will also receive mentorship, training, and support while building skills in interpretation, public engagement, safety communication, and bilingual content production.
Requirements
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English (required or strongly preferred).
- Interest in interpretation, environmental education, public service, visitor safety, or community engagement.
- Strong sense of responsibility, self-direction, and reliability.
- Flexibility and openness to taking on new challenges or unfamiliar tasks.
- Creativity and comfort with experimentation, especially when developing new programs or engagement tools.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to engage thoughtfully with diverse communities.
- Willingness to reflect, grow, and develop increased self-awareness in public-facing work.
- Resourcefulness, adaptability, and a genuine interest in learning throughout the internship.
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
- Be between the ages of 18–30, or up to 35 if a veteran
- Be willing to undergo a background check upon hiring
- Have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record
- Note: A personal vehicle is required for this position.

- Background or coursework in natural sciences, history, or related fields (preferred but not required).
Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, and present bilingual (English/Spanish) public programs that interpret natural and cultural resource themes such as watersheds, migration, and adaptation.
- Engage in community outreach through guided hikes, events, and partnership-based programming.
- Provide informal interpretation in high-use recreation areas, including river and beach zones, offering orientation, resource information, and safety guidance.
- Develop a Spanish-language Junior Ranger activity, booklet, or similar youth engagement tool.
- Lead pop-up river-safety activities and brief interpretive interactions focused on critical visitor-safety topics.
- Observe, document, and report visitor questions, trends, and safety concerns to support staff awareness and decision-making.
- Produce bilingual digital media content for the park’s platforms, such as posts, graphics, or short videos.
- Translate priority safety materials, maps, and publications for improved visitor access.
- Draft program plans, scripts, outlines, and supporting educational materials.
- Collaborate with park staff and partners while participating in relevant trainings and workshops.
