About The Position

Alleghany Highlands Community Services (AHCS) offers a paid onsite internship opportunity in Covington, Virginia, designed for current Bachelor's degree students in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or Human Services. This role provides a chance to engage directly with clients and gain hands-on experience in a supportive, empathetic, and person-centric environment, where excellence and integrity are highly valued. AHCS has served as the primary public behavioral healthcare provider in the Alleghany Highlands area for over 40 years, assisting adults and children facing challenges related to mental health, substance use, and developmental disabilities. As an intern, you will deepen your understanding of various mental health and substance use disorders, learn to identify symptoms, explore different treatment modalities, and develop essential assessment and diagnostic skills. This experience will enable you to create person-centered service plans tailored to individual needs, preparing you for a successful career in the mental health field while contributing to the well-being of the community.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a Bachelor's degree student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or Human Services
  • Understanding of the characteristics of substance use disorders, mental illness, and developmental and intellectual disabilities
  • Meticulous in maintaining confidentiality and security of Protected Health Information (PHI) while adhering to HIPAA regulations
  • Proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with basic office equipment, including fax machines, scanners, copiers, and telephones
  • Strong communication skills
  • Person-centric approach
  • Ability to undergo a background check, including social services review, and drug screen
