About The Position

The Workplace Safety division in the human resource department is seeking a summer intern for 2025. This internship includes several components: modernization of Job Hazard Analysis forms (JHA) into a safety management system, developing new JHA's as needed, conducting noise level monitoring for groups that need updated measurements to ensure OSHA compliance, and assisting Workplace Safety Specialists with onsite safety auditing, training, and construction site inspections. This position is hybrid, performed both on-site at various Hennepin County buildings and/or sites, and remote as job duties require. The internship will start in May 2025 and end in August 2025 with the opportunity to extend on a case-by-case basis.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in an Associates, Bachelor's, or Master's degree program in occupational health and safety, construction safety, industrial hygiene, or a related field.
  • Recent graduate (within 6 months) with an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree in occupational health and safety, construction safety, industrial hygiene, or a related field.
  • A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation to travel to sites throughout Hennepin County.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to multiple locations throughout Hennepin County.
  • Ability to lift equipment up to 50 lbs., occasionally bend, squat, and climb ladders.
  • Access to reliable internet and self-supported hybrid workspace.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards.
  • Experience with auditing.
  • Experience in construction.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft products or equivalent Google products.

Responsibilities

  • Gather, review and update all existing JHA's and enter them into the safety management system.
  • Work collaboratively with the Workplace Safety Specialist to identify work tasks that need a JHA written and write it.
  • Conduct noise level monitoring of individual employees and of work areas to update the measurements needed to ensure OSHA compliance.
  • Create a report of noise level monitoring results for each group that was included in the monitoring.
  • Assist with onsite auditing of county departments as part of the Safety Auditing Program.
  • Assist with conducting construction inspections of Public Works and Facility Services projects.
  • Assist with safety trainings.
