Austin Water is seeking a civil or environmental engineering student, or student with similar training, to join our Water Reuse Programs team. The team is responsible for developing and implementing policy and programs to advance reclaimed water and decentralized/ onsite water reuse across Austin. The position will assist the Water Reuse Programs team with research and case study development, project management, and technical review and analysis of water reuse plans.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university graduate degree program, with some advanced coursework related to the internship program.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques, and methods.
  • Knowledge of City practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to create clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Observes and assists professionals in the assigned department to learn about areas of career interest.
  • Conducts research, collects and organizes data, performs analyses, and prepares reports to supplement knowledge gained through academic courses.
  • Proposes solutions to existing problems and discusses recommendations with administrative personnel to acquire skills in problem solving.
  • Responsible for special projects assigned.
  • Leads, as necessary, in the coordination, administration, or monitoring of specific programs.
  • Assisting with the development of Austin Water’s water reuse programs.
  • Collecting and compiling cost and project implementation data to develop resources such as case studies and cost estimating tools.
  • Researching current water reuse technology and treatment processes appropriate for water reuse applications.
  • Reviewing engineering plan sets for compliance with technical codes and criteria.
  • Coordinating project meetings with AW facilities managers, external consulting engineers and vendors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Updating GIS databases based on as-built drawings, planning documents, and similar data sources.
