About The Position

Reporting to the Senior Economist of the Strategy, Research, and Analytics (SRA) Department, the student will have the opportunity to participate in and learn about various research and business-related initiatives, including but not limited to: Economic condition monitoring and research across different commodities and regions; USDA guaranteed loan data analysis and modeling; Trends in agricultural lender portfolios; and Strategic issue research on data centers and renewable energy finance. The opportunity also allows the student to learn and develop data reporting tools such as R, Python, and PowerBI. Suitable candidates must be able to balance competing priorities with deadlines in a high-stakes environment. The People You Will Work With The position will work closely with the Senior Economist and the SRA team, including the Chief Economist, Senior Data Scientist, and Senior Data Analyst. Additionally, this role will interact with many areas within the organization, including Business Development, Enterprise Risk, and Credit Policy. Where and When You Will Work The position will be remote or hybrid. Any in-person work will be performed at Farmer Mac’s Washington, DC office. Farmer Mac has a Presence with Purpose work environment, which allows for flexibility of work location while providing the opportunity for teams to come together in the office with purpose. Work may be performed during core business hours, Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:30 p.m. eastern time, for a minimum of 20 hours not to exceed 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in agricultural markets
  • Knowledge of or interest in lending practices
  • Solid MS Excel skills and/or experience with R, SQL, VBA, or MATLAB preferred
  • Strong educational record of achievement with an equally strong desire to learn
  • Must be self-motivated and work well both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent attention to details are a must
  • Successful candidates must share Farmer Mac values and demonstrate an ability to work collegially and collaboratively
  • Currently enrolled undergraduate (rising junior or senior in Fall 2026) or graduate-level student pursuing a degree in Agricultural Economics, Economics, Finance, Data Science, Data Analytics, or other quantitative disciplines
  • Minimum GPA of 3.4. Application must include transcript.
