About The Position

Barr is seeking a civil engineering intern to join our Minneapolis team. In this hybrid role, you will support our Engineering and Design business unit, working on project teams involved with civil engineering and related technical field assignments. Project assignments may include civil design and analysis; AutoCAD/Civil 3D drafting and design; field sampling and data collection; preparation of construction plans and specifications; spreadsheet preparation; short report preparation; laboratory testing; and construction inspection and observation. A successful person in this role is motivated and emphasizes client service by providing quality deliverables. They enjoy working independently and as part of a team, using their expertise and technical skills to add to each project. They are flexible in working with their project teams and are willing to occasionally modify schedules to meet project deadlines and/or client needs. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, excellent organizational skills, including scheduling, prioritizing, and follow-up, are key to success. Additionally, this role requires the ability to effectively present technical information to diverse audiences.

Requirements

  • Ongoing enrollment in a civil engineering degree or related degree program.
  • Completion of at least two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematics.
  • Minimum of one full-time semester of undergraduate or graduate coursework remaining after the internship.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Windows OS and Microsoft Office software.
  • Possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and Civil 3D or other CADD-based civil design software.
  • Previous engineering, field, or geotechnical experience.
  • Completion of at least one semester of upper-division engineering coursework.
  • GPA of 3.2/4.0.

Responsibilities

  • Completes site development designs.
  • Conducts civil design and analysis.
  • Performs AutoCAD/Civil 3D drafting and design.
  • Engages in field sampling and data collection.
  • Prepares construction plans and specifications.
  • Prepares spreadsheets and short reports.
  • Conducts laboratory testing.
  • Performs construction inspection and observation.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Collaborates effectively with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
