About The Position

Barr is seeking an archaeology intern to support our summer 2026 cultural resources field season. This position is based out of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and will support the larger Four Corners area, though work be located as far as Minnesota or North Dakota, depending on project needs. This person will be responsible for completing fieldwork tasks with a field lead at various remote locations and documenting findings in accordance with federal, state, and company procedures. A successful person in this internship enjoys working collaboratively and has a high attention to detail. They enjoy traveling to complete cultural resource surveys while also developing their reporting skills between fieldwork sessions. They are adaptable and complete tasks with a client service mindset.

Requirements

  • Education: currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited college in anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history, or a related field.
  • Ongoing enrollment in one of the programs listed above with at least one semester of coursework remaining after the internship.
  • Ability to identify artifacts and features.
  • Working style: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet client and project needs.
  • Willingness and ability to work and hike outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. This may include extremely hot, rainy, and cold weather.
  • Have a strong attention to detail with excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Software: familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and cultural resource databases.
  • Driver’s license: Possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Online, Field Maps, and digital recording.
  • Experience in technical report writing.
  • Regional archaeological or historical experience in the Four-Corners area.

Responsibilities

  • Fieldwork: identify artifacts, cultural features, and site boundaries during survey and monitoring projects; assist with site recording using ArcGIS Online Field Maps
  • Collaboration: build and maintain strong internal relationships and support client engagement while completing tasks before, during, and after the field session
  • Report writing: prepare field site forms and written reports.
  • Equipment management: prepare and maintain equipment before and after fieldwork
