About The Position

The International Student Advisor at Boston University plays a crucial role in supporting approximately 1,200 nonimmigrant international students and their families. This position involves advising students on immigration status, benefits, and regulatory requirements while serving as a liaison to various academic departments. The advisor is responsible for processing F-1 and J-1 visa applications, ensuring compliance with federal regulations, and providing outreach services and workshops to enhance the student experience.

Requirements

  • BA/BS required; Graduate degree preferred in intercultural communication, international relations, or advising.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in foreign student or scholar advising.
  • Knowledge of SEVIS and student immigration regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to manage complex immigration cases.
  • Superior communication skills to educate students and faculty on nonimmigrant regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and follow complex government regulations for non-native English speakers.
  • Experience in maintaining detailed immigration records and ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Patience and professionalism when advising students in crisis situations.
  • Ability to facilitate cross-cultural training and deliver effective group presentations.
  • Adherence to compliance policies and sensitivity to confidential material.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel and advise a caseload of approximately 1,200 nonimmigrant international students and their families regarding immigration status and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as Designated School Official for F-1 students and Alternate Responsible Officer for J-1 students, performing necessary immigration processing.
  • Monitor data and report immigration-related events as mandated by federal regulations.
  • Provide advanced immigration-related advice to faculty and administrators regarding international student regulations.
  • Conduct outreach services and workshops for students, faculty, and administrators.
  • Maintain expertise in electronic systems and databases for recording and reporting immigration data.
  • Perform detailed data reconciliation to ensure accuracy in immigration records.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of academic programs and relevant policies to apply immigration regulations effectively.
  • Communicate with SEVIS Help Desk to resolve data issues.
  • Contribute to the analysis and development of policies and procedures for the student advising team.
