About The Position

Position Overview: The Assistant Director of the University Career Center (UCC) provides supervision and day-to-day management for the career advisor team. This position is responsible for the direct supervision of 6 full-time professional staff members. This role also supports career technology implementation by UCC staff using JGPS, Skills First, and Handshake to enhance student engagement. The Assistant Director reports directly to the Director of the UCC. Unit Overview: The University Career Center (UCC) offers a wide range of quality services designed to support and challenge students at all points of their career development path. The University Career Center serves all KU students with a primary focus on students studying liberal arts and sciences, education, social welfare, music, architecture, and design. The UCC is a unit within the division of Academic Success, which reports through Academic Affairs. Academic Success Overview: Academic Success advocates for and strategically advances education at the University of Kansas. We support students from orientation to graduation, providing them with high-quality, data-driven academic and career advising, targeted academic support systems and networks, and empowering and engaging experiential learning. We serve the university, coordinating with faculty, staff, and students throughout KU to further educational initiatives and strategic goals. Our units include Success Initiatives, Orientation, Academic Advising and Career Advising, and University Academic Support Centers.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of related experience.
  • Five (5) years of related experience in career services, human resources, higher education, or other related fields.
  • Three (3) years of experience providing career guidance services to students in higher education settings.
  • One (1) year of experience using Navigate/JGPS to drive student engagement.
  • Supervisory experience, as evidenced in application materials.

  • Experience using career services technology and working with client relationship representatives to troubleshoot and problem solve implementation issues as evidenced in application materials.
  • Experience developing, managing, and facilitating training programs as shown in application materials.
  • Experience scheduling and coordinating work of student services staff as evidenced in application materials.
  • Experience that required analyzing data to drive program improvements as shown in application materials.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day functions including scheduling, coordination of work, training and compliance, service systems, and referring students to appropriate resources, departments, or personnel.
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and supervise career advisors.
  • Monitors metrics and develop reports describing career advising outcomes.
  • Develop procedures and policies related to career advising, resources and tools.
  • Serve as a system "super end-user" to provide adequate support and training to advising staff while also assisting with coverage needs.
  • Manage Hawk Hustle newsletters (content strategy, training, overseeing staff writers, collecting metrics and data).
  • Develop a strong understanding of the developmental needs and concerns of college students.
  • Stay up to date on career advising best practices on cultivating career discovery and career readiness.
  • Maintain knowledge of changes in the workplace and economic outlook as they impact students' career choices, preparation, job search and employment.
  • Leverage Navigate/JGPS to increase student engagement in career services.
  • Serve as UCC's expert on using career technology such as SkillsFirst and Handshake to drive student engagement with career services.
  • Train UCC staff in functionality and best practices on using career technology.
  • Serve as the JGPS specialist for the University Career Center.
  • Stay up to date on system updates, release notes, and platform webinars, sharing key takeaways with UCC staff.
  • Support Academic Engagement Manager with developing training materials for use with KU faculty and academic departments.
  • Manage a small caseload of students interested in career advising.
  • Serve as back-up when needed for scheduled career workshops and programs.
  • Contribute to the Academic Success Annual Report as requested by the Program Director.
  • Participate in relevant campus recruitment events and campus outreach efforts.
  • Attend relevant unit meetings.
  • Participate in department and campus meetings and trainings.
  • Participate in relevant professional development annually.
  • Other duties assigned by University Career Center Program Director.
