The Internal Medicine Resident is a medical school graduate who participates in a graduate medical education (GME) training program sponsored by Methodist Healthcare Memphis Hospitals as a sponsoring institution of the ACGME. The general objective for the trainee is to gain foundational training in medicine. The internal medicine resident works under the supervision of an attending physician and assists him/her in providing patient care, performing rounds, recording patient progress, admissions, ordering tests and examinations, and organizing for discharge and patient care. Requirements

  • MD/DO Medicine
  • Applied medical education experience as required by ACGME.
  • Knowledgeable, skilled and baseline competencies as medical school graduate in the concepts of providing safe, quality, timely, equitable, and cost-efficient patient care.
  • Highly detailed, oriented and precise.
  • Excellent organizational/leadership skills.
  • Software proficiency skills are desired, along with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with care team and other members of the healthcare team, including but not limited to nursing, pharmacy, respiratory, physical therapy, and radiology and laboratory team members.
  • Demonstrates discretion in dealing with confidential information and sensitive issues.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the clinical evaluation and care of patients in a variety of patient care settings with sufficient frequency to achieve the clinical competencies required by their discipline under the supervision of the attending staff.
  • Writes orders and progress notes in patient charts under the supervision of attending physician.
  • Performs procedures, under the supervision of attending physician.
  • Assumes progressive responsibility for patient care activities according to the level of education, ability and experience. The program director and the attending staff will determine the resident's level of responsibility and autonomy.
  • Participates fully in the educational and scholarly actives of the program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and students in the clinical setting and didactic sessions.
  • Attends all required didactic sessions; participate fully in the educational and scholarly activities of the program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and students.
  • Participates in appropriate institutional committees and councils whose actions affect their education and/or patient care including, but not limited to quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  • Logs and adheres to educational work hours.
  • Develops a personal program of continued learning to foster professional growth.
  • Abides by all policies and procedures; including the provisions of the GME Policy and Procedure Manual, the residency training programs and the regulations of any affiliated institution as assigned
