About The Position

Under the direction of San Ysidro Health and the Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, core faculty members serve as clinical leaders, assuring the delivery of high-quality teaching and patient care as part of a robust accredited Residency program. Core Faculty members will be compensated for dedicating an average of fifteen hours per week to residency training, ensuring that all requirements are met, while providing excellent clinical care. Core faculty will receive annual training on a variety of topics including (but not limited to): (a) all relevant policies and procedures, (b) the evaluation and assessment of residents, (c) core competencies and milestones and (d) faculty development. During non-teaching time, physicians will manage and provide acute, chronic, preventive, curative and rehabilitative medical care to patients and determine appropriate regimen in internal medicine.

Requirements

  • Completion of clinical training.
  • Graduate from accredited school of Medicine.
  • Current CA MD or DO.
  • DEA license.
  • CPR certification.
  • Board certified in American Board of Internal Medicine.
  • Good oral and written communication.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred skills include skin biopsy, excision of skin lesions, suturing, casting, and sigmoidoscopy phlebotomy.
  • Must obtain staff privileges at local hospitals and nursing homes.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise IM residents, following procedures for appropriate trainee levels of supervision and requirements for residency training to ensure patient safety and high-quality care.
  • Respect resident work hours, paying close attention to signs of Fatigue and Sleep Deprivation in individuals.
  • Be a role model and meet professional standards of behavior.
  • Evaluate IM residents, using competency based/milestone evaluations and via direct observation and other relevant evaluation methods.
  • Coordinate relevant didactics if applicable.
  • Supervise IM Residents QA/QI and Research activities as required/appropriate.
  • Mentor residents, advise them regarding their career, patient care, scholarship, and educational goals.
  • Serve on relevant committees.
  • Assist in developing and implementing procedures and protocols to facilitate the delivery of comprehensive health services and quality assurance.
  • Develop a longitudinal relationship with residents throughout the duration of their continuity experience.
  • Maintain ratio of residents/other learners to faculty preceptors not to exceed 4:1.
  • Will not have other patient care duties while supervising more than two residents or other learners.
  • Other faculty responsibilities will not detract from the supervision and teaching of residents.
  • Devote sufficient time to the educational program to fulfill their supervisory and teaching responsibilities and demonstrate a strong interest in the education of residents.
  • Administer and maintain an educational environment conducive to educating residents in each of the ACGME competency areas.
  • Establish and maintain an environment of inquiry and scholarship with an active research component.
  • Regularly participate in organized clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and conferences.
  • Attend meetings as required and participate in committees as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
