About The Position

This position of the internal communications officer develops, coordinates and delivers clear, accurate, and timely internal communications within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (DAC). This position will assist agency leadership with communicating strategic priorities, policy updates, operational changes, and employee engagement initiatives to a diverse workforce who operate in correctional facilities and administrative offices throughout the state. This position maintains the consistency of messaging with the Department’s mission by promoting public safety, rehabilitation and the pursuit of professional excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, public affairs, media, journalism, English, or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in communications, public relations, or publicity work; (OR) an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of communication principles, writing standards and internal messaging strategies
  • Proficiency with communication tools including Microsoft Office, SharePoint, intranet platforms and email systems
  • Possess excellent writing and editing skills with the ability to translate excessive complexity into simple and clear language
  • Strong analytical skills to gather complex information, interpret legal or technical language, and produce clear, accurate materials
  • Proven ability to build media relationships and organize press conferences, public events, and outreach activities under tight deadlines

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute internal communication strategies aligned with agency goals and priorities.
  • Draft and distribute clear, consistent executive messages, announcements, newsletters, and internal reports.
  • Manage crisis and incident communications in coordination with leadership and public information teams.
  • Oversee internal communication channels including the intranet, email bulletins, digital signage, and employee newsletters.
  • Ensure accurate, accessible, and brand‑consistent messaging, translating complex policies into clear language.
  • Prepare high‑quality communication materials for senior leaders such as speeches, presentations, FAQs, and briefings.
  • Provide strategic communication guidance to division leaders, support employee engagement initiatives, and maintain feedback mechanisms to strengthen two‑way communication.
